Physicians Immunization

The practice of immunization is difficult given the rapid advances in science and the pace at which new products come on the market. This is further complicated by the delay of new products being placed on the provincial schedule. There are many international and national expert opinions on how immunizations should be given (see NACI, CPSBCCDC) and the BCPS can assist with the practical application of this information.

To this end, we provide the BC Provincial Immunization Schedule 2012.

Every opportunity should be taken to ensure children and their parents have up to date information on immunizations:

  1. Primary care providers briefly discuss immunizations at all pertinent visits.
  2. Information on vaccines currently not part of the provincial schedule should be provided in the form of discussion and/or written information.
  3. Consultants discuss immunizations as part of office or hospital consultations.

ImmunizeBC is a 'one stop shop' for immunization information and resources for British Columbians. It includes news, schedules and answers to frequently asked questions about vaccine preventable diseases. The site is an important resource for health care professionals that includes links to important immunization updates, resources, and the BC Immunization Manual

The AAP's Childhood Immunization Support Program (CISP) has excellent information for pediatricians on their website.  It includes policy guidelines, communication tools and parent resources - all supported by sound scientific research.  The web site also assists in helping parents make informed decisions about immunizations.

This site also includes a News and Multimedia page which contains tools that physicians can use to help educate parents and even a press kit for physicians who are speaking to the media in support of immunization.

The Canadian Coalition for Immunization Awareness and Promotion's website includes information for parents and physicians.  The goal of the CCIAP is to contribute to the control/elimination/eradication of vaccine-preventable diseases in Canada by increasing awareness of the benefits and risks of immunization for all ages via edcuation, promotion, advocacy and media relations.

Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada have a resource for parents on the Health Canada website:  Childhood Immunization - It's Your Health.

And another great resource for parents is Your Child's Best Shot: A Parent's Guide to Vaccination, published by the Canadian Pediatric Society
